This years tomatoes

For the last 4 years at the start of each August I set a date, taken from the moon calendar in which I need to plant my 100 or so tomatoes seeds, to end up with 80 plants to go in the vegie garden around Melbourne Cup weekend.  This year I did the same, only I had gone out and bought myself a heated seed raising mat, rearranged the office and moved the seeds inside

little baby tomatoes
And it work.  After about 5 days the seeds were up.  After about 2 weeks there were leaves

This was when it all started to go to crap

Late in August the weather changed from the cold, wet winter we were having and bought put the sun.  So I rushed to put the tomatoes outside, in their little glasshouses, I thought in the shade.

Well the shaded went away didn’t it and the direct sun light came out and my little and very weak young tomatoes got baked.

This is all that is left of the original 120 seeds sown.  Well I have learnt from my mistakes.

No more heated seed mat.......

it looks the same, but .....

Today's harvest looks the same as the last harvest - more zucchinis, cucumbers, five yellow cherry tomatoes and a handful of strawberries, but there is one new item.

Look in the middle of the photo, in the front hidden between the zucchinis and a Crystal Apple Cucumber and there it is - the first RED tomato of the season.  Only 4 weeks late, but here all the same.  1 tigerella tomato.

As per last week the tomatoes and strawberries didn't make it out of the back back yard.  I'll need to start doing something with the zucchinis and cucumbers. Any suggestions?

Tuesday 17 Jan. 2012

7 more zucchinis (making 21 in the fridge), about a dozen white gherkins, 1 green cucumber, a large hand full of "oh it was nice" large strawberries and 6 yellow brandyvine cherry tomatoes.
A hand full of Yellow Brandyvine cherry tomatoes - So far not a good year

The tomatoes didn't make it out of the back back yard and I will be having strawberries for dinner.   Thursday will be spent dealing with the first wave of the zucchini - I was thinking Bread n Butter pickles, as I forgot to make any last year and maybe pickled cucumbers.

Today's harvest
Tomorrow morning I have to deal with the plum tree.  I AM GOING TO GET THE FRUIT BEFORE the king parrots.  Plum chutney, plum sauce, maybe plum jam.

Where to start....

This blog is about my life and how I am turn my daily going ons into Jaci Can. Maybe the best thing to do is tell you what comes out of my garden, what goes in to my garden and what I make from it. Then how it will get to you. From my garden to your desk top.

I'll just start with today’s harvest

2 normal cucumbers, 4 mini white pickling cucumbers, 8 zucchini (black & yellow) making 14 in total in the fridge, 2 yellow cherry tomatoes (it is not a good tomato season so far. This is a blog for another day), 2 green tomatoes that had spilt due to the rain, 3 white turnips for my dinner along with the 5 eggs the chickens laid today.
